The Slip That Leads Into the Fall EP
By Christian Schaeffer Wednesday, Mar 24 2010

No one can accuse Magnolia Summer leader Chris Grabau of getting lazy. Sixteen months after the release of the band’s most recent (and strongest) LP, Lines From the Frame, Grabau and company have compiled a pair of digital EPs (which are available at your favorite online MP3 retailer; find the list online at www.magnoliasummer.com). At first glance, the EPs seem like an odds-and-ends collection — and, sure enough, there are the requisite demos, alternate takes and even a remix included. But what’s more striking about the songs is how many disparate styles and influences Grabau explores. “Rangeline,” the first track on Slip, begins like an Album Leaf track; its minimal drum-machine pulse and airy keyboard notes get caught like flies in a web of hazy ambience. That same experimentation appears on Current‘s “The High Road,” as a percussion loop and New Order-esque guitar lines allow for one of Grabau’s most fragile and arresting vocals.

Many songs are altered versions of Lines songs or unheard demos for that record. Of the former, “Pulling Phase to Ground (Horn Mix)” finds Magnolia Summer at its house-rockingest, with members of the Funky Butt Brass Band giving a bright counterpoint to the clanging guitars. André Allen Anjos of the Remix Artist Collective (RAC) gives an alternately dreamy and visceral re-reading of “Diminished Returns” by pushing the dizzying guitar arpeggios into overdrive and letting the big synthesizer pads cycle through their phases. Of the new songs, the guitar-and-vocal simplicity of the demos works well for “Planned Obsolescence,” as short and sweet of a track that we’ve heard from Grabau. These songs — and the EPs — are just more reminders that Magnolia Summer’s table scraps are as satisfying as many bands’ main courses.

TRACK LISTING FOR THE CURRENT MOVES – EP

BIRD – A non-album instrumental track inspired by Laura Ford‘s sculpture of the same name located at the City Garden in downtown St. Louis. Tracked live with only a single piano overdub. :: Chris Grabau – guitar, piano // John Horton – guitar // Greg Lamb – bass // Shae Mosley – drums

THE CURRENT MOVES – Based on a song idea by Joe Thebeau of Finn’s Motel. Joe might’ve heard something different but to me, it’s a nod to all of our past musical sinking ships. :: John Baldus – drums // Chris Grabau – vocals, guitars // John Horton – guitar // Greg Lamb – bass

PULLING PHASE TO GROUND (HORN MIX) – When recording this song for the album, “Lines From The Frame, ” I was always heard a horn riff. Recently, the guys from St. Louis’ Funky Butt Brass Band were available to pull a George Lucas. They helped create a really cool version of the song. :: John Baldus – drums // Greg Lamb – bass // Chris Grabau – vocals, guitars, nashville guitar, ebow // John Horton – guitars // Ben Reece – saxaphone / Aaron Chandler – trombone / Adam Hecke – trumpet

THE HIGH ROAD – A song that should probably live in demoland. Chris Grabau – vocals, guitar, bass, loop percussion

DIMINISHED RETURNS (RAC REMIX) - remix by André Allen Anjos of the Remix Artist Collective. :: John Baldus – drums // Kevin Buckley – strings // Greg Lamb – bass, vocals // Chris Grabau – vocals, guitars, organ // John Horton – guitars // Joe Thebeau – vocals

TRACK LISTING FOR THE SLIP THAT LEADS INTO THE FALL – EP

RANGELINE – Featuring vocal harmony by Kelly Kneiser from Glossary. Rangeline is the main strip of my hometown. It stretches for about 5 miles and its speeding limit is 20 mph. The chorus is a phrase a friend once told me :: John Baldus – drums // Greg Lamb – bass, vocals // Chris Grabau – vocals, guitar, ebow, wurlitzer, percussion, drum loop // Kelly Kneiser – vocal

THE SECOND VOYAGE – An instrumental track (recorded live) from the same session as “Bird.” Featuring Shae Mosley on drums. Should have closed out Lines From The Frame :: Kevin Buckley – violin // Greg Lamb – bass // Chris Grabau – acoustic guitar // John Horton – guitar, mandolin // Shae Mosley – drums

THE SLIP THAT LEADS INTO THE FALL - We debuted this song live on the air on KDHX 88.1 FM in St. Louis. A recording of that performance made the rounds online thanks to a couple of blogs. This is the first formal recording of the track and its one of my favorite recordings to date. Inspired by a broken AC unit. :: Dave Anderson – pedal steel // John Baldus – drums // Greg Lamb – bass, vocals // Chris Grabau – vocals, guitar, organ // John Horton – guitars, nashville guitar // Joe Thebeau – vocals

PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE - Another song that lives in demoland. A non album track for T :: Chris Grabau – vocals, guitars, vibraphone

A PART OF THE WHOLE – An exercise in simplicity that became rather complex. :: Dave Anderson – pedal steel // John Baldus – drums // Kevin Buckley – strings // Greg Lamb – bass, vocals // Chris Grabau – vocals, guitar, ebow, organ, wurlitzer // John Horton – guitars
